What changed
State veteran benefits move all year: legislatures pass new exemptions, agencies change dollar figures, forms get replaced. We recheck every state on a rolling cycle, and this page is the dated log of every substantive update to our state pages, newest first, each with its official source. Corrections to our own pages are listed too; we would rather show our work than pretend the site was always right.

- Oct 29 · Louisiana · property tax
Louisiana gives disabled veterans a property-tax break: at a 100% VA rating, your home is exempt from essentially all property tax. We previously told readers that "certain municipal assessments" might still apply, without saying which ones or how much. The state Attorney General has now clarified exactly what that means: every Louisiana homeowner gets a base $7,500 homestead exemption, and that first $7,500 of your home's assessed value can still be charged city (municipal) property tax if your city has one. It is only the additional veteran exemption above that $7,500 that is fully exempt from municipal tax too. So if you live inside city limits, expect a small municipal-tax line tied to just that first $7,500 to still show up on your bill even at 100% disabled, while everything above it stays tax-free. Nothing to file or do differently, this is just a clearer explanation of your existing benefit, worth knowing so the bill doesn't surprise you. (official source) - Oct 26 · New Hampshire · property tax
New Hampshire gives a veteran with a total and permanent service-connected disability a $700 credit off the property tax bill, and lets each town or city vote to raise that credit as high as $5,000 a year. We had already told you about the $5,000 option. What we had not told you: the state law says that if your town has adopted that bigger optional credit, it REPLACES -- rather than adds on top of -- two other veteran tax breaks (the standard Veterans Tax Credit and the full exemption for a VA-adapted or Specially Adapted Housing home). So if you might qualify for the full exemption instead of the dollar credit, do not assume the bigger-sounding $5,000 number is the better deal. Ask your town assessor which benefit actually applies to you before you file. (official source) - Oct 25 · Kentucky · health & veterans homes
Kentucky runs state veterans' homes that provide nursing-home-level care for eligible veterans, each operated by the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs. The newest one, a 60-suite facility in Bowling Green, had finished construction but wasn't yet open or taking residents the last time we checked. It has now opened and begun admitting veterans, as of early October 2026, becoming Kentucky's fifth operating veterans' home. If you're a Kentucky veteran who needs skilled nursing care, you can apply at the Bowling Green location now -- call its admissions contact, Deb Gatto, at 270-535-2346, and have your DD-214 and proof of Kentucky residency ready. Alabama veterans who qualify for the state's 100% Physically Disabled hunting and fishing license category can now buy a lifetime version of that license instead of renewing it every year. Before this law, that group had to renew an annual hunting license (about $7.50/year) and a $1/year fishing license every single year. As of October 1, 2026, a new state law (House Bill 271) lets them instead pay once for a lifetime hunting license, a lifetime freshwater fishing license, and/or a lifetime saltwater fishing license -- $50 each if you are under 50, $30 each if you are 50 or older, plus a $1 issuance fee per license. If you qualify for this license category and plan to keep hunting or fishing in Alabama for more than a few more years, ask about the lifetime option the next time you renew, through Outdoor Alabama or your local Probate Judge's office -- it replaces the annual renewal for good. Ohio has a benefit for veterans who want to become teachers that this page hadn't covered before: the Ohio Military Veteran Educators Program (OMVEP). It fully waives the fee for an Ohio educator license, permit, or certificate -- including renewals and all license types -- for any honorably discharged veteran or current service member; spouses of active-duty service members qualify too. There's also a limited voucher covering the testing fee for certain educator licensing exams, though that part has narrower eligibility rules. If you're an Ohio veteran pursuing a teaching or other educator license, set up your OHID account and upload your discharge paperwork through the state's CORE licensure system to claim the fee waiver. (official source) - Oct 18 · North Dakota · other benefits
North Dakota runs a Housing Assistance Program Grant for veterans facing a housing emergency, like rent, a deposit, or an urgent housing-related bill. We'd previously found that this benefit existed, but the state hadn't published exact dollar limits, so our page just told readers to ask a Veteran Service Officer for the numbers. The state's own policy documents, in effect since November 2025, now give exact figures: up to $7,500 per calendar year, available once every three years, with your household's monthly net income capped between about $2,977 and $7,728 depending on household size, and cash assets capped at $10,000. If you're facing a housing emergency, bring your discharge paperwork and income and asset documentation to your County Veteran Service Officer to apply. (official source) - Oct 18 · North Dakota · health & veterans homes
Resolved the North Dakota Veterans Home's bed-count figures: the Home's own official site confirms 52 skilled-nursing beds and 98 basic-care beds (150 total), replacing the page's earlier hedge about conflicting published counts. (official source) - Oct 18 · North Carolina · property tax
Added House Bill 1122 (filed April 2026, referred to House Rules) to the pending-legislation disclosure -- it would exclude the entire appraised value of a qualifying disabled veteran's primary residence from property tax, going further than every other pending NC bill. Not enacted; no change to the live $45,000 exclusion. (official source) - Oct 17 · South Carolina · health & veterans homes
South Carolina operates six state-run Veterans' Homes offering nursing care to qualifying veterans. A new 2026 law, Act No. 153, exempts these state-owned homes from South Carolina's Certificate of Need review process -- a state approval previously required before expanding or adding health-care facilities. This doesn't change who can get in or what it costs today; it just removes a regulatory step that could have slowed the state from building or expanding a veterans' home in the future. There's nothing for a veteran to do now, but it's a sign the state may have an easier path to adding veterans'-home capacity. (official source) - Oct 17 · Puerto Rico · health & veterans homes
Added a new mention of the Junta Asesora de Asuntos de la Mujer Veterana, a standing Puerto Rico advisory board (Ley 234-2018, updated by Ley 27-2025) that coordinates health, housing, workforce-reintegration, and suicide-prevention services specifically for women veterans, which this page did not previously mention. (official source) - Oct 17 · Puerto Rico · vehicles & recreation
Puerto Rico gives every veteran a free first special veteran license plate (tablilla de veterano), and charges a small fee for any additional plate beyond the first. This page previously said that additional-plate fee was a single $10 stamp, based on DTOP's own official application form. CESCO's current fee listing now shows the real total is $13, made up of two separate internal-revenue stamps ($11 plus $2) -- the application form itself has not been updated since 2013 and still only prints the old $10 figure. If you are applying for a second or later veteran plate in Puerto Rico, budget for roughly $13 in stamps rather than $10, but confirm the exact current total with the CESCO counter before you pay, since the discrepancy between the form and the fee listing has not been formally reconciled. (official source) - Oct 17 · Pennsylvania · vehicles & recreation
Pennsylvania gives disabled veterans free or reduced-cost hunting and fishing licenses, and two things about this just got better. First, a 100%-rated veteran's free fishing license is now explicitly a one-time lifetime license under a 2025 law (Act 21), so it no longer needs to be renewed every year. Second, that same law dropped an old requirement that a veteran's disability (for the 60-99% reduced-fee fishing license) had to be connected to a war or armed conflict -- previously only combat-era veterans in that disability range qualified, and now any service-connected disability in the 60-99% range qualifies, at the same roughly $3 fee. If you are a Pennsylvania veteran rated 60-99% whose disability was not combat-related, you may now qualify for this discounted fishing license where you did not before; if you are rated 100%, you can stop renewing your fishing license every year. (official source) - Oct 17 · Pennsylvania · education
Pennsylvania's Postsecondary Educational Gratuity Program (PEGP) pays up to $500 per term, for up to four years, directly to the school of a qualifying child of a 100% permanently disabled (or service-deceased) veteran. The individual per-student award has not changed, but the state just increased the total yearly pool of money behind the whole program from $350,000 to $400,000 in the 2026-27 state budget, after the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs reported applications have roughly doubled over the past two years. Nothing to do differently today, but if your child may qualify, apply through your County Director of Veterans Affairs promptly each year -- a larger but still limited pool means less cushion before funds run out. (official source) - Oct 16 · Oklahoma · vehicles & recreation
Oklahoma gives a reduced $5 vehicle registration fee to disabled veterans rated 50% or more, and this page did not previously mention that a veteran's surviving spouse qualifies too. Service Oklahoma's own page confirms the surviving spouse of a qualifying disabled veteran can register one vehicle at that same discounted rate, proven with a letter of eligibility from the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs (ODVA) rather than the veteran's own C599 card. The benefit is limited to one vehicle per surviving spouse and is not available for online renewal, same as the veteran's own discount. If you are the surviving spouse of a qualifying Oklahoma disabled veteran, request this ODVA letter of eligibility and bring it when you register or renew a vehicle in person or by mail; other Oklahoma surviving-spouse veteran benefits require you to remain unremarried, so confirm with ODVA whether that condition applies here as well. (official source) - Oct 16 · Louisiana · property tax
Louisiana gives disabled veterans a property-tax exemption on their home that grows with VA rating, reaching a full exemption at 100%. Until now it was unclear whether a veteran who co-owns the home with a spouse under Louisiana's community-property rules got the full exemption or only half, since the title is jointly held. Louisiana Attorney General Opinion No. 25-0070 (March 23, 2026) confirms the full exemption applies to the entire value of the property, not just the veteran's undivided half-interest. This matters because a parish assessor who was only exempting half the home's value was shortchanging a married, co-owning veteran. If your assessor is prorating the exemption for this reason, you can now point them to this opinion. (official source) - Oct 16 · Hawaii · property tax
Confirmed via the actual Kauai County ordinance text (Sec. 5A-11.8(d)) that the under-80%-disabled-veteran property-tax exemption has no minimum rating floor; the page's 'ask the office' hedge was replaced with this confirmation. (official source) - Oct 16 · Florida · education
Corrected the contact email for Florida's Scholarships for Children and Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans program from a stale [email protected] to the correct [email protected], and added FDVA's document-submission portal for faster processing. (official source) - Oct 16 · California · employment & hiring
California's state hiring preference for veterans does not require any minimum VA disability rating -- it never did, but this site's page and comparison table previously said a veteran needed a rating of 10% or more to qualify. The correct rule, read directly off the state's own application form (CalHR 1093), is that any veteran discharged under conditions other than dishonorable who has never held permanent civil-service status qualifies, regardless of disability rating; the 100%-disabled threshold applies only to a separate route for military spouses. This matters because a veteran with no rating, or a rating under 10%, may have wrongly assumed they were ineligible and skipped applying for this valuable top-of-the-list hiring preference. Nothing about how to apply changed -- only the eligibility description was wrong and is now fixed. (official source) - Oct 16 · California · education
Governor Newsom signed AB 2203 on September 28, 2026, which will require California's community colleges and CSU campuses (and asks the UC to do the same) to give priority class registration to students using the CalVet College Fee Waiver or federal GI Bill benefits. SB 1407, a bill that would have expanded California's military-retirement-pay tax exclusion, did not pass the Legislature this session and is not law; the page's prior wording wrongly implied a vote was still imminent. (official source) - Oct 15 · New Mexico · vehicles & recreation
New Mexico's free Disabled Veteran license plate program, for veterans with a 50% or greater VA disability rating, has always covered up to two vehicles at no cost. We'd previously described it as capped at two vehicles with no mention of a further option. A 2023 law (NMSA 66-3-412(B)) that had not been reflected on the page clarifies that the Motor Vehicle Division will issue additional Disabled Veteran plates beyond the first two, as long as the veteran pays the standard plate and registration fees on those extra vehicles. If you have a third vehicle (or more) and assumed only two could carry the DV plate, you can now register additional vehicles with the same plate design for the normal fee. (official source) - Oct 15 · Missouri · other benefits
Missouri created a new bid preference for businesses owned by honorably discharged veterans. Before this law, only businesses owned by a veteran with a service-connected disability got a bidding edge on state and local government contracts. As of August 28, 2026, a new law (RSMo 34.069, created by House Bill 2593) extends that edge to any honorably-discharged-veteran-owned business: a 3-point bonus when bids are scored, plus a statewide goal that 3% of government contracts go to veteran-owned businesses. If you own a business and are an honorably discharged veteran, even without a disability rating, you can now ask the contracting agency how to claim this preference when you bid on state or local work. Fixed an internal citation error in our state-comparison data: the effective date for Missouri's full exemption of military retirement pay from state income tax was listed as 2016, but the correct effective date is tax year 2021. The underlying benefit itself (100% of military retirement pay excluded from Missouri taxable income) is unchanged and was already stated correctly on the Missouri benefits page -- only this one cross-reference field had the wrong year. The New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton is the state's long-term care facility for veterans, providing skilled nursing and custodial care. We'd previously said admission required an honorably discharged veteran of the armed forces, reserves, or NH National Guard. As of August 31, 2026, a state law (RSA 119:1, amended by Chapter 252) broadened who qualifies: you can now also be admitted with a general discharge under honorable conditions, or an uncharacterized discharge tied to a service-connected injury, illness, or disability -- not just a fully honorable discharge. If a general or other non-honorable discharge previously kept you from applying to the NH Veterans Home, it's worth checking again under this wider standard. Mississippi's 2026 law protecting veterans from predatory paid benefits consultants was enacted under a different final name than our page listed: the "PLUS Act" (Preserving Lawful Utilization of Services for Veterans Act, Chapter 453), not the "SAVE Act" title it carried earlier in the legislative process. The consumer protections themselves are unchanged -- no upfront fees, no fee in your first year post-discharge unless you waive free VSO help, and no guaranteed-outcome promises. We also added a detail that was missing before: a paid consultant's fee is capped at the lesser of five times your monthly benefit increase or $12,500, whichever is less. If you're ever approached by a paid veterans-benefits consultant in Mississippi, you can now cite the correct law by name and know the dollar ceiling on what they can legally charge you. Connecticut veterans can now get two DMV fees waived for free: the $84 fee for a first driver's license and the $28 fee for a state ID card, plus 90 days (instead of 60) after leaving the military to renew your license, registration, or get an emissions inspection done without a late fee. This law had already passed, but it hadn't taken effect yet -- our page said it was 'coming' and that the normal fees still applied. As of October 1, 2026, it's now in effect: any veteran the DMV verifies as a veteran qualifies, no disability rating needed. If you're a Connecticut veteran getting a license or ID card, ask the DMV clerk for the waiver under Public Act 26-35 (the Hero Act) -- the DMV's own public fee page hadn't listed it yet as of this writing, so you may need to point the clerk to the law. Iowa offers qualifying disabled veterans a steeply discounted lifetime fur harvester (trapping) license instead of the regular annual trapping fee. Our page previously could not tell you the exact price because two official state sources disagreed: the application form said $7, while the state's own administrative fee-schedule rule said $59.50. A 2026 law (Iowa Code 483A.24(17), as amended by 2026 Iowa Acts ch. 1161, effective July 1, 2026) settles it at $5 plus any processing fee. The application form and the old fee-schedule rule haven't caught up to the new law yet, so call Iowa DNR Customer Service at (515) 725-8200 to confirm the exact counter price before you apply -- but $5 is now what the law actually sets. Colorado lets certain veterans subtract income from their state tax return under the 'Reacquisition of Colorado Residency During Active Duty Military Service' subtraction. This benefit wasn't on our Colorado page before -- we hadn't found it yet. It applies if Colorado was your home of record, you established residency in another state while on active duty, and you later moved back and became a Colorado resident again: you can subtract the income you earned while a resident of that other state from your Colorado taxable income. If this describes your situation, claim it on Form DR 0104AD, documenting the 'left' period (DD Form 2058, out-of-state W-2, or voter registration) and the 'reacquired' period (Colorado voter registration, a property purchase, vehicle titling, or a new will). Added previously-undocumented ND DVA Hardship Assistance Grant programs to the Other section: general Hardship Assistance Grant ($5,000/yr, confirmed via Policy 412/413 asset limit $5,500 cash / income limit $1,413.75-$3,060.54/mo by household size), IMPACT Hardship Assistance Grant ($5,000/yr, $7,000 lifetime, Policy 612 asset limit $10,000 cash), and Housing Assistance Program Grant (deposits/rent, unpublished 'reasonable' limits). Confirmed via Policy 410 (N.D.C.C. 37-14-01.1 veteran definition) that none of the three is gated on a VA disability rating -- eligibility is veteran-status + 1-yr ND residency + income/asset limits + documented need, so framed as a general (not disability-specific) benefit. NC state employment preference expanded to spouses of active-duty service members effective 10/1/2026 (S.L. 2026-40 / SB1041, Public Workforce Modernization Act); preference statute recodified at G.S. 126A-57.3. (official source) - Oct 4 · North Carolina · property tax
Added two previously-untracked pending bills (HB299: raise $45k exclusion to $54k; SB143: remove the dollar cap entirely for a full-value exemption) to the page's pending-legislation disclosure. Both remain stalled in committee since March 2025 -- no change to the live $45,000 exclusion. (official source) - Oct 3 · Tennessee · property tax
Added advisory note: the VALOR Act (HB0052/SB0473), which would have given 100% P&T veterans full property-tax reimbursement with no $175,000 cap plus a free hunting/fishing license and a vehicle-registration exemption, died at 114th GA sine die (4/23/26) without a floor vote in either chamber. Veterans Home admissions phone number corrected from stale 605-745-5127 to current 605-519-5445; also fixed a residual internally-inconsistent admission-requirements sentence (flat one-year-residency/income language) to match the already-verified per-diem/preference/no-income-test facts. (official source) - Oct 3 · South Carolina · property tax
Clarified Route 1 property-tax exemption standard using verbatim S.C. Code §12-37-220(B)(1): disability test is functional (inability to perform substantial gainful employment), not a numeric VA %, and closely tracks TDIU -- resolves prior open question on whether Individual Unemployability qualifies. (official source) - Oct 2 · Puerto Rico · property tax
Added a previously undocumented fact that changes the real total benefit: every PR homeowner (veteran or not) already gets a $15,000 reduction in assessed value under the general residential exemption (Codigo Municipal de PR, Ley 107-2020, Art. 7.035), which stacks on top of the veteran-specific routes -- so Route 1 alone nets $15,000+$5,000=$20,000 off assessed value, not just $5,000 as the page previously implied. Also narrowed the page's retroactivity note (previously presented as applying to all three routes) to Route 1 only, per CRIM's own AS-38 form. (official source) - Oct 2 · Puerto Rico · income tax
Replaced a vague 'verify current-year forms' hedge with concrete, confirmed filing mechanics for the military-pension income-tax exemption: claim it on Anejo H Individuo, with Form 1099-R and DD-214 (and W-2 if applicable) attached, per Hacienda's own filing instructions for the tax-year-2025 return. (official source) - Oct 2 · Oklahoma · health & veterans homes
Added a previously undocumented favorable rule: veterans rated 70% or greater service-connected disability receive full cost of care at no charge at any Oklahoma Veterans Center, effective since June 1, 2009 (the page previously only described a vague income-tied sliding scale). The RPTL 458-a(11) full ($0) exemption for P&T veterans now applies to assessment rolls dated on/after today (10/1/2026) in jurisdictions that adopted it; wording flipped from forward 'coming' framing to present tense. Corrected the North Dakota Veterans Home's skilled-nursing bed count from 38 to 52, confirmed via a direct Medicare.gov Care Compare lookup (a primary federal certification source) that independently matches the home's own operating site; the separate basic-care (domiciliary) bed count remains a genuine unresolved conflict across sources (98-112 published) and stays hedged on the page. Removed a stale statewide peddler's/hawker's-license veteran fee waiver claim - RSA 320 and RSA 321 were both fully repealed eff. 9/1/2023; licensing is now local-only under RSA 31:102-a. (official source) - Sep 17 · Nevada · education
NRS 396.540(2)(j) bars NSHE from charging the non-resident tuition surcharge to any honorably discharged veteran regardless of current residency (5-year window requirement removed by AB165/2021) - the page previously stated flatly that no Nevada tuition benefit runs to a living disabled veteran, which was wrong; corrected. Rolled the Montana Disabled Veteran (MDV) Assistance Program income bands from Tax Year 2026 to Tax Year 2027 figures, matching the Dept. of Revenue's own already-updated program page (e.g. single-filer full-benefit ceiling $48,152 to $49,654); updated the page, the property-tax calculator dataset, and all three partial-tier notes. Removed a stale claim that the Dept. of Revenue's Working Military Retirement Exemption page hadn't caught up with the law's 2033-sunset repeal -- the agency's page has since been corrected and now agrees with the statute; also added the statute's nonresident-forfeiture clause (MCA 15-30-2120(9)(c)). (official source) - Sep 16 · Montana · education
Resolved the previously vague Purple Heart Scholarship reference into concrete, sourced terms under MCA 10-2-118: $1,000/year, renewable annually, open to any combat medal at or above Purple Heart, public MT university/vo-tech/tribal college, statute requires a 2.5 GPA (MVAD's own page still says 2.0); also tightened the War Orphans Waiver's eligibility wording to match the verbatim MUS text (killed in action or died of a combat-related injury/disease/disability, not simply "died in service"). (official source) - Sep 16 · Montana · health & veterans homes
Hedged an overstated "no out-of-pocket cost" claim for 70-100%-rated veterans at Montana's state veterans homes -- Glendive's Skilled Care level actually runs on a Medicare/copay structure (VA assists with the copay) rather than a blanket full-coverage waiver like Butte's. Added HB 2362 (Rep. Schmidt), a fourth 2026-session bill that would have given a straight percentage property-tax exemption matching VA disability rating, to the page's enumeration of died 2026 veteran property-tax bills -- confirmed dead via direct house.mo.gov bill-status read (Reported Do Pass 3/25/26, never calendared for a floor vote). Replaced a hedged veterans'-preference description with the verified point breakdown: 20 points (disabled veteran or spouse of a totally/permanently disabled veteran), 15 points (wartime veteran, surviving spouse of service-connected death, or KIA family member), 10 points (other veteran or current Guard/Reserve member), per Fla. Added concrete burial plot-fee figures (~$950 per veteran/spouse/dependent plus $115 niche-cover or $445 casket/in-ground) for the National Guard/Reservist population that pays a fee under the 2024 federal Burial Equity Act, replacing a generic "confirm with the cemetery" hedge. Corrected a real error in the state-comparison dataset: park_pass claimed a blanket free state-park-entry benefit with no rating required, but MDWFP's own fee page shows this is actually a 15% camping/lodging discount (which the HTML page already stated correctly) -- fixed the JSON to match. Added a previously-missing 5th route to the $300,000 market-value exclusion: a surviving spouse of a service member who died of a service-connected cause on active duty (DD Form 1300/2064), verbatim-confirmed in Minn. Stat. Rewrote the state hiring-preference paragraph, which cited the wrong law and misstated who qualifies for the 10-point vs 5-point preference under the actual source, Civil Service Commission Rule 3-8 -- Purple Heart status and spouses of active-duty members are not their own preference category, and surviving-spouse tiering depends on a qualifying child. Resolved the Purple Heart plate fee-bundle question: DMV's own fee schedule lists it as an Honor Special Group (Part 4) plate with $0 contribution, structurally incompatible with Part 16 Sponsored plates' $25 minimum -- a plate issued today gets only the base plate-fee exemption, not the broader registration/driver-ed/uninsured-motorist/corridor fee bundle. Corrected the DV-plate certifier-expansion attribution: the physician/PA/APRN certifier language and 5-year permanent-disability recertification actually came from Public Act 103-843 (eff. 1/1/2025), not Public Act 104-88 (eff. 1/1/2026) as the page previously said -- PA 104-88's only contribution was adding physical therapists to the certifier list. Softened the Joining Forces Idaho emergency-relief grant description after current primary sources no longer state the previously-cited $1,500 cap, 90-day window, or Chief Administrator waiver -- the program now reads as a multi-source referral/coordination model rather than a single fixed-dollar IDVS grant. Found a real, previously-missed enacted law: HB4168 (Chapter 140, Laws 2026, signed 6/13/2026) amends A.R.S. 42-11111 effective TY2027 -- Individual Unemployability newly qualifies for the full property-tax exemption, and the income test is removed for both veteran exemption routes (it will apply only to the separate non-veteran disabled-person category). (official source) - Sep 11 · Kentucky · vehicles & recreation
Corrected the POW free-camping benefit's sourcing -- the exemption card is issued by the Kentucky Department of Parks (KRS 148.0211) upon submission of discharge/VA documentation plus proof of residency, not issued directly by the VA as the page previously stated. Added the previously entirely-missing K-40H Homestead Refund (up to $700, income cap $43,389 for TY2025) as an independent qualifying route for 50%+ disabled veterans, alongside the existing K-40SVR freeze/refund; only one of K-40H/K-40PT/K-40SVR may be claimed per household. (official source) - Sep 11 · Kansas · other benefits
Corrected an inaccurate description of HB2274's homeless-veteran ID card benefit -- the standard $14/$10 nondriver ID fee is NOT waived (only a birth/death-certificate copy fee is); added the real benefits the bill provides (the ID card never expires, expanded acceptable proof documents) and a separate, previously-missing 'VETERAN' designation available to any honorably discharged veteran via DD-214/NGB-22 submission to KOVS. (official source) - Sep 11 · Iowa · vehicles & recreation

Corrected a real accuracy gap: the page described the new 2027 full ($0) property-tax deduction for totally-disabled veterans as requiring a 'service-connected' disability. Per DLGF's 2026 Veterans Deductions FAQ, IC 6-1.1-12-14 does NOT require service-connection -- a VA pension certifying total disability, a compensation award, or an IDVA certificate of eligibility all qualify (only the separate $350 credit requires a service-connected 10%+ rating). This could have wrongly discouraged a non-service-connected 100%-VA-pension veteran from applying. (official source) - Sep 8 · Maryland · vehicles & recreation
Added a previously-missing, currently-effective fact: MVA waives the standard $20 substitution/replacement plate fee for the disabled-veteran plate in the 50-99% disability band, effective 10/1/2024 under Ch.472/473 of 2024 (HB178/SB55). (official source) - Sep 8 · Louisiana · vehicles & recreation

Clarified the free Disabled Veteran license plate is not limited to 100%/IU veterans -- Form MV-9W's own eligibility boxes show any veteran with a compensable VA rating (10%+) or drawing a VA non-service-connected pension qualifies for the free plate, distinct from the narrower 100%/IU threshold for the property-tax and TAVT exemptions. (official source) - Sep 7 · Wisconsin · vehicles & recreation
Corrected the vehicle sales-tax framing: Wisconsin's actual exemption covers 'mobility-enhancing equipment' (adaptive equipment/accessories enabling vehicle entry/operation/exit) for any qualifying disabled person regardless of who paid for it (1989 Act 238, 1991 Act 39) -- broader than the prior page text, which implied the exemption only reached vehicles adapted via a VA adaptive-equipment grant. Added the real Subsistence Aid ($3,000/12mo) and Health Care Aid (dental/vision/hearing sub-caps, $7,500 combined lifetime cap) figures from their correct URL, plus a newly-found adjacent benefit, Aid to Military Families (emergency assistance for a KIA veteran's surviving spouse/dependents or an activated Guard member's family). Replaced an unconfirmed hedge with the confirmed out-of-state active-duty pay exclusion: up to $50,000/year for 120+ consecutive days of active duty performed outside Louisiana (R.S. 47:293(9)(e)). (official source) - Aug 22 · Louisiana · education
Filled three missing Title 29 eligibility gaps: the dependent-child age floor (16, not just the 25 ceiling), the surviving spouse's 10-year use-it window and remarriage bar, and the veteran's own Louisiana residency requirement (entirely absent previously). (official source) - Aug 22 · Louisiana · employment & hiring
Added the 'un-remarried' qualifier for a surviving spouse's civil-service exam preference eligibility. (official source) - Aug 22 · Alaska · vehicles & recreation
Corrected a factual error: Alaska does have one toll facility (the Whittier Tunnel); it carries no veteran/disability discount so the practical 'no toll benefit' conclusion is unchanged, but the prior 'no toll roads or bridges at all' premise was wrong. (official source) - Aug 22 · Alaska · health & veterans homes
Corrected the Palmer Veterans' and Pioneers' Home admission age from an unconfirmed '65+' to the primary-sourced '60+ years of age' (plus one year continuous Alaska residency). (official source) - Aug 19 · Vermont · income tax
Corrected the 'claim only one retirement exemption' rule: Vermont's Act 71 (2025) exempts military retirement/SBP as a separate exclusion from the Social Security/Civil Service Retirement System/Other Retirement System group, so it stacks on top of whichever of those a veteran also claims, effective tax year 2025. (official source) - Aug 19 · Vermont · vehicles & recreation
Added a previously-missing benefit: Vermont sets aside up to 10% of annual moose permits (capped at 6) in a priority drawing for any resident veteran with active-duty service and a non-dishonorable discharge, regardless of disability rating. (official source) - Aug 19 · Utah · education
Corrected the Purple Heart graduate tuition waiver: S.B. 220 (2026, effective 5/6/2026) raised the graduate-level cap from $10,000 to $15,000 and repealed the prior 10-year-from-undergraduate-completion application deadline; the statute was also renumbered to Utah Code 53H-11-303. Undergraduate tuition remains full and uncapped. (official source) - Aug 19 · Utah · vehicles & recreation
Sharpened the Purple Heart plate fee-waiver scope: Utah's own DMV plate classification and Part 16's statutory definition list both indicate a Purple Heart plate is an Honor (Part 4) plate, not a Part 16 Sponsored Special Group plate, so a plate issued today most likely does not reach the broader post-2023 fee bundle beyond the base plate-fee exemption. (official source) - Aug 19 · Utah · property tax
Added a caution that some counties' own public-facing instructions (e.g. Duchesne County) haven't caught up to H.B. 124's 2026 switch to one-time filing and still tell applicants to refile annually. (official source) - Aug 18 · Tennessee · vehicles & recreation
Added three previously-missing vehicle tax breaks: the first Disabled Veteran plate is free for a 100% P&T veteran or specific lower-rating disabilities (Tenn. Code Ann. 55-4-256); a VA-grant vehicle gets its own county motor-vehicle-privilege-tax exemption (5-8-102(d)(6)); and adaptive equipment plus a VA-grant vehicle purchase are exempt from sales/use tax (67-6-353). (official source) - Aug 18 · Tennessee · other benefits
Softened the state veterans' cemetery dependent-burial-fee claim from an unqualified 'no cost' to a flagged conflict (a TDVS-sourced citation elsewhere states $700), pending direct primary-source confirmation. (official source) - Aug 18 · South Dakota · property tax
Added two 2026 laws strengthening the missed-deadline safety net: HB1193 requires counties to retroactively abate/refund (up to 4 years) a veteran's $200,000 exemption once a pending VA permanent-and-total claim is approved, and SB12 lets veterans petition for a discretionary refund if they missed the paraplegic-exemption or owner-occupied-classification deadline. (official source) - Aug 18 · South Dakota · health & veterans homes
Corrected the State Veterans Home admission criteria: current law and the Home's own application process key eligibility to VA per-diem payment eligibility, with no separate income test — a previously cited ~$1,000-above-VA-Improved-Pension-rate income limit is stale and not part of current admission criteria. (official source) - Aug 18 · South Carolina · other benefits
Added the newly enacted South Carolina Safeguarding American Veterans' Benefits Act (Act No. 211/S.695, effective 5/19/2026), which bans upfront fees and outcome guarantees by paid veterans'-claims consultants and caps any contingency fee at the lesser of 5x the monthly benefit increase or $12,500. (official source) - Aug 17 · Rhode Island · property tax
Corrected the Gold Star parents' exemption per-town dollar examples, which had been conflated with unrelated exemption categories (base-wartime and full-SAH figures): corrected to the state's own per-town report figures (Cumberland $25,377, Westerly $43,068, Narragansett $20,000). (official source) - Aug 17 · Rhode Island · income tax
Affirmatively confirmed (previously an open hedge) that a surviving spouse receiving Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) annuity payments qualifies for the same military-retirement income-tax modification. (official source) - Aug 17 · Rhode Island · vehicles & recreation
Added detail to the State Parks disability pass: it requires annual renewal (unless VA re-evaluation is waived) and corrected State Parks Headquarters' seasonal office hours. (official source) - Aug 17 · Puerto Rico · property tax
Corrected the property-tax page's temporary-elevation history: the Route 1 ($5,000) veteran exemption was never itself elevated (that was a separate, non-veteran general homestead exemption raised to $150,000); the Route 2 ($50,000-to-$500,000) elevation ran only FY2009-10 through 2011-12 (three years), not through 2018-19, per CRIM's own AS-38 form. (official source) - Aug 17 · Puerto Rico · health & veterans homes
Added a previously-missing Casa del Veterano rental-subsidy benefit (Ley 313-2000 as amended by Ley 146-2024): up to $600/mo domiciliary or $800/mo nursing care, income-scaled and regulation-set (not a fixed statutory amount). (official source) - Aug 17 · Puerto Rico · health & veterans homes
Corrected the Atlantic Garden Veterans Cemetery (Aguadilla) address from Carr. 110 Km 29.8 to the correct Carr. 110 Km 6.6, Bo. Montana, per OPV's own page; and added a newly enacted law (Ley 145-2026) requiring government housing/property notices to disclose the veteran preference. (official source) - Aug 17 · Oregon · education
Added a previously-missing state-law tuition waiver (ORS 350.285) for spouses/children of veterans who died on active duty, died of a service-connected disability, or are certified 100% disabled, and for children of Purple Heart recipients - covers up to 180 credits/6 terms at Oregon public universities and OHSU, and stacks with federal DEA benefits. (official source) - Aug 17 · Oregon · vehicles & recreation
Added two minor completions: a VA Summary of Benefits Letter now counts alongside a DD-214 as proof of veteran status for the recognition-plate program (HB 2559, 2025), and resident disabled veterans can buy a reduced-price ($29) elk tag through ODFW. (official source) - Aug 16 · Utah · vehicles & recreation
Corrected the Purple Heart plate fee-waiver scope: Utah Code 41-1a-1211(12) gives any Purple Heart recipient an undated exemption from the base license-plate fee regardless of when the plate was issued; the broader exemption (special-group fee, registration, driver-ed, uninsured-motorist, county corridor fees) is confirmed under 41-1a-1211(10)(b) but limited to plates issued on/before 12/31/2023 or under the Part 16 Sponsored Special Group program, and whether today's Purple Heart plates fall under Part 16 remains unconfirmed. (official source) - Aug 16 · Ohio · education
Updated the War Orphans & Severely Disabled Veterans' Children Scholarship (WOS) to the newly-approved AY2026-2027 funding levels: private-institution flat award rose from $6,330 to $6,397 (public-institution rate stays 77% of tuition/fees). (official source) - Aug 16 · North Dakota · vehicles & recreation
Removed a stale caution that ND Game and Fish's own licensing page still showed the old 100% disability threshold for the combined hunting license; the agency page has since been corrected to the current 50%-or-greater threshold, matching our page and the 2025 law (HB1147). (official source) - Aug 15 · New Mexico · income tax
Corrected a stale claim that the $30,000 military-retirement income-tax exclusion expires after tax year 2026; a 2024 law (Ch.67, Laws of 2024 / HB252) removed the sunset and extended eligibility to surviving spouses, effective for tax years beginning on/after 1/1/2025 - the exclusion is now ongoing, not set to lapse. (official source) - Aug 15 · New Jersey · vehicles & recreation
Corrected mis-cited state park admission benefit: general free entry requires being 62+, totally disabled, or an active NJ Guard member with completed IADT (not any-degree VA rating alone); the any-degree standard applies only to the beach-vehicle-permit fee (13:1L-12), not the statute previously cited (13:1L-12.1, which actually covers veterans'-organization events and Gold Star Family ID holders). (official source) - Aug 15 · Nevada · vehicles & recreation
Corrected Disabled Veteran plate eligibility: NRS 482.0962 requires a 100% combined VA rating OR a lower rating that independently meets NRS 482.384's mobility/medical criteria (certified by a licensed medical professional) - not any VA-rated disability as the page and compare-JSON previously implied. (official source) - Aug 15 · Nevada · education
Corrected a hedge implying a living NV Guard member's tuition waiver could be transferred to a spouse/child; NSHE's actual family fee waiver is death-triggered only (Guard member killed on duty), same 10-year window as the POW/MIA family waiver. (official source) - Aug 14 · Nebraska · vehicles & recreation
Added that a denied disabled-veteran motor-vehicle tax exemption applicant can appeal to their county board of equalization within 20 days (Neb. Rev. Stat. 60-3,189(1)) — Sarpy County used this route to reverse all of its first-year deadline denials on 7/7/2026. (official source) - Aug 14 · Montana · property tax
Added the honorably-discharged and 7-months-primary-residence qualifiers to the MDV property-tax exemption's eligibility list on the page (already correctly modeled in the calculator dataset, just missing from the HTML text) — sourced to MCA 15-6-301/15-6-311. (official source) - Aug 14 · Missouri · employment & hiring
Corrected the sourcing for Missouri's 5/10-point veterans' hiring preference — the figures live on the state employment application (Form MO 300-0739), not in RSMo 36.220 as previously cited; the statute itself only sets a tie-breaker and training-credit preference. (official source) - Aug 14 · Mississippi · other benefits
Corrected the Mississippi VA headquarters street address (War Memorial Building, 120 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39201) — the page had a stale/wrong address (660 North Street). (official source) - Aug 14 · Mississippi · other benefits
Added the newly enacted SAVE Act of 2026 (HB1076/Ch.453, eff. 7/1/2026), which bans referral fees, upfront fees, and outcome guarantees by paid veterans'-benefits consultants and caps contingent fees at 5x the monthly benefit increase secured. (official source) - Aug 14 · California · income tax
Refreshed SB1407's status on the page — remained under submission at its 8/13/2026 Assembly Appropriations suspense-file hearing (not yet disposed); no dollar-figure change ($40,000 cap TY2026-2036 already correct). (official source) - Aug 13 · Connecticut · other benefits
Pinned the exact statutory vehicle for the free veteran bus pass to Public Act 26-68 (SB1, the FY2027 budget act signed 5/26/2026) — previously the page described the benefit but the underlying bill (SB-237) had been confirmed dead with no PA number; the budget-bill vehicle's own PA number is now cited directly. (official source) - Aug 12 · Kansas · vehicles & recreation
Added that a surviving spouse who was already receiving the 100% P&T/TDIU sales-tax exemption may keep using it until remarriage, per KDOR's own exemption page (previously only stated for the K-40SVR property-tax refund). (official source) - Aug 12 · Indiana · property tax
Added a third surviving-spouse qualifying door to the new $250 property-tax credit: spouses of veterans who died while serving on inactive duty training now also qualify, per the Indiana DVA's own current page (previously the page listed only killed-in-action or died-on-active-duty). (official source) - Aug 11 · Utah · vehicles & recreation
Tightened the Purple Heart plate fee-waiver description to the statutorily-confirmed fees (plate issuance + special-group fee under Utah Code 41-1a-1211(11)(b)); flagged the broader fee-waiver claim as unconfirmed pending direct statute verification. (official source) - Aug 11 · Maryland · health & veterans homes
The Maryland Veterans Trust Fund reopened Aug 1, 2026 after a pause and now runs on a normal monthly (1st-15th) application cycle. (official source) - Aug 11 · Maryland · employment & hiring
Added the Military Personnel & Veteran-Owned Small Business Loan Program (MPVOLP): no-interest loans $1,000-$100,000 for veteran-owned small businesses, on an application-window cycle. (official source) - Aug 11 · Louisiana · health & veterans homes
New law (Act 558/HB609) exempts a veteran from medical-records fees when requesting records to support a VA or LDVA disability claim, once per veteran, effective Aug 1, 2026. (official source) - Aug 11 · Hawaii · property tax
Confirmed Hawaii County's annual minimum property tax at $200/year (previously unconfirmed on the page, with conflicting $100-$300 secondary-source claims), per the county's own rates page. (official source) - Aug 11 · Connecticut · vehicles & recreation
CT DVA now provides veterans a free bus pass, funded starting FY2027 (July 2026). (official source) - Aug 10 · District of Columbia · employment & hiring
Confirmed via DSLBD's own CBE Certification Document Checklist that the DSLBD Veteran-Owned Business Enterprise (VOB) subcategory requires a DD Form 214 as proof of veteran status; added to the page and sources (previously only sourced from a secondary aggregator). (official source) - Aug 10 · California · income tax
Refreshed SB1407's (military retirement pay exclusion cap increase) procedural status on the page -- placed on the Assembly Appropriations suspense file 8/5/2026, hearing set 8/13/2026 -- still not enacted, dollar figures unchanged. (official source) - Aug 5 · Wisconsin · employment & hiring
Corrected a stale claim that WI adds 10-20 civil-service preference points by disability rating; that numeric table was repealed by 2015 Act 150 and replaced by an equal-qualifications tiebreaker plus guaranteed promotional-register certification for 70%+ disabled veterans. (official source) - Aug 5 · Wisconsin · health & veterans homes
Added the actual federal citation (38 CFR 51.41) for the rule that a 70%+ (or IU) veteran's state-veterans-home nursing care is paid in full by the VA with no separate charge, replacing an uncited hedge. (official source) - Aug 5 · West Virginia · property tax
TSD-455 guidance PDF confirmed reprinted January 2026 but still carries the pre-SB194 stale 90-100% P&T standard; page note sharpened to flag the cosmetic-only reprint. (official source) - Aug 5 · Alabama · health & veterans homes
Adkins State Veterans Home reopening (9/13/2026) confirmed on track with full bed-count detail (174 beds, 28 memory-care); noted ADVA's own site is stale and does not reflect the fire/reopening. (official source) - Aug 4 · Washington · property tax
Clarified that Washington's 2027+ veteran/senior/disabled property-tax relief CDI deduction options are mutually exclusive: the $7,500 (+$7,500 spouse) standard deduction replaces itemizing medical expenses, while the $6,000/year room-rental-income deduction is only available if itemizing -- per DOR's own Q&A, an applicant cannot claim both in the same year. Page and JSON previously read as if both could be combined. (official source) - Aug 3 · Maryland · vehicles & recreation
Corrected the vehicle-registration section: Maryland Transportation Art. §13-903 provides a real registration-FEE exemption (not just a free plate) for veterans VA-classified as having lost use of a hand/arm/leg, as totally disabled, or with a specific vision impairment - the prior page said registration fees were owed in all cases pending confirmation, and the compare-table detail overstated it as a blanket 100%-rating rule.
