Florida is one of the friendlier states for disabled veterans, mostly because it has no state income tax and a property tax structure that rewards a high rating. This page walks through the property tax piece in plain language, plus a few other state benefits worth knowing about. None of this is legal, tax, or financial advice, and I'm not going to guess at dollar figures the state hasn't published clearly. Think of this as a map so you know what to ask about, not a substitute for checking the real numbers yourself.
100% Permanent & Total (P&T) rating = full exemption. If you're rated 100% P&T for a service-connected disability, your Florida homestead can be exempt from ad valorem (property) tax entirely, $0 owed. You need Florida residency, legal title as of January 1 of the tax year, and a VA letter certifying the total and permanent disability.
Below 100%, it's a flat exemption, not a percentage. A rating of 10% or higher qualifies for a flat-dollar reduction in assessed value (not a full exemption). This is a separate, smaller benefit from the 100% P&T exemption above, and it applies at a much lower rating threshold. An unremarried surviving spouse of a qualifying veteran can also claim this one.
Age 65+ with a combat-related disability gets a percentage discount. If you're 65 or older and your disability is combat-related, your homestead tax bill can be discounted by the same percentage as your VA rating (for example, a 40% combat-related rating means 40% off the homestead bill). This one specifically requires the disability to be documented as combat-related, which is a different standard than just being service-connected.
Surviving spouses can keep the benefit. For the 100% exemption and the combat-related discount, a surviving spouse who holds title and lives at the home generally keeps the benefit after the veteran passes, until they remarry or sell. If they move, they may be able to carry some of it to a new home.
These property tax benefits are tied to your rating and homestead status rather than to an income test, but filing deadlines and documentation requirements are strict (the homestead filing deadline is generally March 1, filed with your county Property Appraiser). Get the current dollar amounts, exact eligibility rules, and forms from your county Property Appraiser or the Florida Department of Revenue, not from this page.
No state income tax. Florida doesn't tax personal income at all, so your VA disability compensation (already federally tax-free) and any retirement pay aren't touched at the state level either. There's no separate veteran tax credit to apply for, because there's no state income tax to begin with.
Free driver license and DV license plate at 100%. A 100% service-connected rating gets you a no-fee driver license and a free Disabled Veteran plate, with VA documentation.
Free lifetime state parks pass and hunting/fishing license. Veterans with a service-connected disability can get a free lifetime Florida State Parks entrance pass, and a free 5-year hunting and fishing license is available at a 50%-or-greater rating.
Education benefits for Purple Heart recipients and survivors. Florida waives undergraduate tuition at state schools for Purple Heart or higher combat-decoration recipients, and offers a separate scholarship program for the children and spouses of veterans who are 100% P&T or died of a service-connected disability.
Pull your current VA disability rating letter (download it from VA.gov if you don't have a copy handy). You'll need it for every one of these benefits.
Call or visit your county Property Appraiser's office and ask specifically which of the three property tax benefits above you qualify for, and what the current dollar figures and deadlines are.
If you want to double check your rating, appeal a decision, or aren't sure what you qualify for, sit down with a FREE accredited Veteran Service Officer (VSO), through DAV, VFW, American Legion, or your county Veteran Service Officer. Find one at VA.gov. Never pay someone to file or improve a VA claim for you.

This page is for education only and is not legal, tax, or financial advice, and it has no affiliation with the VA or any government agency. Benefit rules and dollar amounts change; verify everything with the official source (your county Property Appraiser, the Florida Department of Revenue, or floridavets.org) before relying on it. For help with a VA claim or rating, use a free accredited VSO (DAV, VFW, American Legion, or your county VSO) found through VA.gov, never a paid claims service. If anyone approaches you offering to convert your disability pension into an annuity or investment product, or asks you to sign over benefits for cash, walk away and talk to a free VSO or an accredited financial advisor first.
